Black mold behind wardrobe: DIY bleach or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, speckled patches spreading along the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Silicon Oasis. It's in the corner that never gets any sun and feels damp. I'm worried it's making our allergies worse. Is this a job I can handle myself with bleach from Ace Hardware, or do I absolutely need to call in a professional, and what's the typical cost for a room this size?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of mold growth driven by Dubai's high humidity and condensation, exacerbated by poor air circulation behind furniture. The black, speckled patches are highly likely to be a mold colony, and its presence indicates a persistent moisture issue.

While a DIY approach with bleach is a common first thought, I strongly advise against it for several technical reasons. Bleach is a surface-level biocide that is ineffective on porous materials like drywall and plaster. It will bleach the visible discoloration but leave the root structure (hyphae) intact, allowing regrowth. More critically, it can aggravate the situation by releasing a high volume of mold spores and harmful chlorine fumes into your indoor air, worsening allergy symptoms. Scrubbing the area will also aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination.

In the UAE's climate, where year-round AC use can create significant condensation and hidden dampness, the source of the moisture must be professionally identified and resolved. This could be a leaking AC condensation line within the wall, capillary rise from the slab, or simply severe condensation due to the temperature differential. Without addressing this, the mold will return.

For a situation like this, a professional inspection is not just recommended; it is essential. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters, thermal imaging cameras, and borescopes to pinpoint the exact moisture source and assess the full extent of the contamination within the wall cavity. Remediation for a single room of this size typically ranges from AED 1,500 to AED 4,000, depending on the severity and required containment procedures.

Do not disturb the area. For a proper assessment and lasting solution, please call our experts at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. Saniservice is equipped to handle this in full compliance with Dubai Municipality's environmental health and safety standards.
