Is black mold behind wardrobe urgent for kids' health?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black spots I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah Park. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from the humidity. I’m really worried about their health. How urgent is it to get professional mold removal, or can I handle this myself with bleach this weekend?

Based on your description, this is a situation that requires immediate professional attention. The presence of visible black mold growth, coupled with your children's respiratory symptoms (coughing), strongly indicates an active infestation that is affecting indoor air quality and health. In the climate of Dubai and Jumeirah Park, where high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for mold (condensation occurs easily on cooler surfaces like walls behind furniture), what you see behind the wardrobe is likely just the tip of the iceberg.

Attempting a DIY removal with bleach is strongly discouraged. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and wood, as it only bleaches the surface mold without addressing the root hyphae (roots) growing within the material. Furthermore, improper cleaning can agitate the colony, releasing a significant cloud of toxic spores and mycotoxins into your bedroom's air, potentially exacerbating your children's health issues.

UAE regulations, particularly from Dubai Municipality, emphasize the importance of professional assessment and remediation to ensure the health and safety of occupants, especially vulnerable groups like children. A certified inspector will conduct air and surface sampling to identify the mold species and spore count, which is critical for determining the correct remediation protocol.

For the health of your family, I recommend you cease use of the room and contact a professional service immediately. Saniservice specializes in this exact scenario. Their certified technicians will contain the area, safely remove the contaminated materials, and employ industrial-grade HEPA filtration and antimicrobial treatments to properly resolve the issue. You can reach them for an urgent inspection at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or hello@saniservice.com.
