Black mold behind wardrobe: health risk for kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black spots I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe in Marina. It's a big patch and it’s been super humid since last month, so I think it's spread. Is this something serious enough that I need to contact my landlord immediately, or can I handle it myself with a bleach spray?

Based on your description of a large patch of black mold behind a wardrobe in a Marina apartment, this is a significant concern, especially with children exhibiting respiratory symptoms like coughing. The combination of Dubai's extreme humidity, especially during the summer months, and the lack of air circulation behind large furniture creates a perfect breeding ground for mold. The black coloration is particularly concerning, as certain species like Stachybotrys chartarum (often referred to as "toxic black mold") can produce mycotoxins that are harmful to human health, particularly for children and those with respiratory conditions.

Do not attempt to handle this yourself with bleach. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and only removes the surface discoloration, not the root structure of the mold. More critically, improper cleaning can aerosolize the spores, potentially worsening your children's exposure and spreading the contamination throughout your home.

Under UAE tenancy law, the landlord is typically responsible for maintaining the property's structural integrity and addressing issues like persistent dampness and mold that result from building envelope failures or inadequate ventilation. You should contact your landlord immediately, document the issue with photographs, and formally request a professional inspection and remediation.

Given the health risks to your family, I strongly recommend a certified professional assessment. Our team at Saniservice specializes in mold inspection and PCR laboratory testing to accurately identify the species and concentration, which is critical for determining the correct remediation protocol. We are fully equipped to handle this in accordance with Dubai Municipality guidelines, ensuring the mold is safely and completely removed. Please do not delay; for immediate advice or to schedule an inspection, call us at 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com.
