Black mold in closet: DIY or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing on the back of our bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. It's been extra humid lately and I think it might have started because we stored some winter clothes that weren't completely dry. What's the best way to handle this ourselves, or should I call a professional company right away?

Based on your description, this is a common issue in Dubai due to our high humidity levels and the constant cycling of air conditioning, which can create significant condensation, especially in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces like closets on interior walls. Storing damp clothing is a frequent catalyst.
For a small, isolated area (less than 10 square feet), a careful DIY approach may be feasible. First, wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Isolate the area by sealing the closet off from the room with plastic sheeting. The moldy drywall surface can be cleaned with a solution of detergent and water (never mix bleach with ammonia). Completely dry the area using fans and a dehumidifier. The root cause, however, is excess moisture. You must identify and rectify this; it could be the initial damp storage, but more likely it's due to condensation from the AC system or a lack of ventilation. However, given that the mold is on an interior wall, there is a non-zero risk that the growth has penetrated deeper into the drywall or even the insulation cavity, which is impossible to properly address without professional equipment and techniques. Disturbing it incorrectly can aerosolize spores and contaminate your entire bedroom. For a confirmed and recurring issue like this, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. We use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to identify the exact moisture source and borescopes to inspect inside walls. This is crucial for an effective, permanent solution. Remediation involves advanced containment, HEPA filtration, and antimicrobial treatment to ensure the mold is eradicated, not just superficially cleaned.
