Black mold in kids' room: see a doctor now?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the last few weeks and I’ve just found a patch of black mold in the corner of their bedroom closet, behind some boxes. We’re in an older building in Bur Dubai and I’m worried the recent humidity made it worse. Should I take them to a doctor immediately, or is cleaning it ourselves enough to stop the symptoms?

Based on your description, you should absolutely consult a pediatrician for your children's persistent cough. While not all mold is toxic, the presence of black mold (which could be Stachybotrys chartarum) and the correlation with your children's respiratory symptoms is a significant health concern that requires medical evaluation. Their developing immune systems are more susceptible to the irritants and potential mycotoxins released by mold spores.

The recent high humidity in Dubai is a key factor. Our buildings, especially older ones in areas like Bur Dubai, are prone to condensation issues, particularly when year-round air conditioning creates cold spots that meet warm, humid air. This condensation behind furniture or in closets provides the perfect environment for mold growth you've described.

Do not attempt to clean this yourself. Disturbing the mold by cleaning will aerosolize a high concentration of spores, potentially worsening your children's exposure and symptoms. Over-the-counter solutions are ineffective against the root cause and may only bleach the visible growth, leaving the harmful colony intact.

This situation requires professional assessment. According to UAE health and safety guidelines, a certified mold inspection is necessary to identify the species, the extent of the contamination (which is often far greater than what is visible), and the moisture source. Remediation must then be performed by trained technicians using containment barriers, HEPA filtration, and specialized antimicrobial agents to ensure it is removed safely and completely.

For a thorough inspection and a health-focused remediation plan, I strongly recommend you contact our specialists at Saniservice.
