Can I remove black mold in shower grout myself?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years in Jumeirah and just noticed a patch of black mold growing in the grout between the tiles in our shower. It’s been so humid lately that the bathroom never seems to dry out completely, even with the exhaust fan running. Is this something I can tackle myself with a cleaner from ACE Hardware, or do I need to call a professional cleaning company?

As a certified mold inspection and remediation specialist in Dubai, I can advise on your shower grout issue. The persistent high humidity and condensation in our climate, especially during summer, creates a perfect breeding ground for mold, even with an exhaust fan running.
For a small, isolated patch (less than 10 square feet), a DIY approach may be feasible. Use a dedicated, anti-fungal grout cleaner from a hardware store, not just bleach, as it may only remove the surface discoloration without killing the root structure. Scrub thoroughly with a stiff brush. The critical step is addressing the moisture source. Ensure your exhaust fan is powerful enough for the room's volume and runs for at least 30 minutes after showering. Wiping down wet surfaces immediately also helps. However, if the mold reappears quickly, has a musty odor, or if the grout is cracked or leaking, this indicates a deeper issue. The mold may have penetrated behind the tiles or into the wall substrate, which a surface clean cannot fix. In such cases, and to comply with Dubai Municipality's health and safety standards for dwellings, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. Our company, Saniservice, uses moisture meters and borescopes to diagnose hidden problems unseen to the naked eye. We can determine if the issue is superficial or requires professional remediation to protect your property's integrity and your family's health.
