How to prevent mold in a humid bedroom closet?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our master bedroom closet on the outside wall has started getting patches of black mold on the leather shoes and bags I have stored in there. We’re in a Jumeirah villa and I first noticed it a couple of weeks after that period of heavy dew and humidity we had. I’ve wiped everything down with vinegar, but I’m worried it will just come back. What’s the most effective long-term solution to control the humidity in a built-in closet like this?

The issue you're describing is a classic symptom of high relative humidity and condensation within a confined space, exacerbated by Dubai's coastal climate and the constant cycling of air conditioning. The outside wall location is a significant factor, as it is likely a thermal bridge where warm, humid air penetrates and condenses on the cooler interior surfaces, especially when the AC is running. Vinegar is a superficial fix; it may kill surface mold but does not address the moisture source, leading to rapid regrowth.
The most effective long-term solution requires a multi-pronged approach. First, a professional inspection is crucial to identify the exact moisture source—whether it's interstitial condensation, a minor leak, or elevated ambient humidity from en-suite bathrooms. We use thermal imaging and precise moisture meters to pinpoint these issues. For the closet itself, immediate actions include ensuring a minimum 2-inch air gap between the outer wall and stored items and using moisture-absorbing desiccants like silica gel. However, these are temporary measures. For permanent control, the installation of a supplemental dehumidification system is often necessary. This could be a compact, ductless mini-dehumidifier designed for cabinetry or a positive pressure system that introduces slightly dried air into the space to prevent moist air infiltration. Improving air circulation by undercutting the closet door or adding a small, quiet exhaust fan can also be highly effective. Crucially, all mold-affected materials must be professionally remediated and hygienized to remove micro-particles and residual spores that vinegar cannot eliminate. Given the potential for hidden mold growth within the wall cavity, we strongly recommend a professional assessment. Our certified experts at Saniservice can diagnose the root cause and implement a Dubai-specific remediation and humidity control plan.
