Can I remove closet mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa’s walk-in closet in the master bedroom has felt damp for a while, and I just pulled out a stack of winter clothes to find a bunch of them covered in black spots. We’re in Jumeirah and I’m worried the humidity from the recent foggy mornings has gotten into the walls. Is this something I can tackle myself with a vinegar spray from the supermarket, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold removal company to check it out properly?

Based on the symptoms you've described in your Jumeirah villa, I strongly recommend a professional inspection and advise against a DIY approach with vinegar. The presence of a persistent damp feeling and visible black spot colonization on contents indicates a significant moisture issue that is likely embedded within the construction materials.

The UAE's high humidity, especially during foggy mornings and the summer months, creates a perfect environment for mold growth. In a closet, this is often caused by condensation from an adjacent cooling duct, a small plumbing leak, or moisture wicking through the wall from the outside. Vinegar or other supermarket solutions are superficial; they may temporarily clean the visible mold on the surface of your clothes but will not address the root moisture source or the hyphae (root system) growing within the drywall, insulation, or backing of the closet. This means the mold will return, often more aggressively.

Furthermore, improper handling can cross-contaminate other areas of your home. Disturbing the mold without proper containment and air filtration (e.g., using a HEPA-filtered air scrubber) will aerosolize spores, potentially causing health issues and spreading the problem.

Our standard protocol involves a thorough inspection, including moisture mapping with thermal imaging and hygrometers to pinpoint the exact source. Remediation then follows strict IICRC S520 guidelines, involving containment, safe removal of affected porous materials (drywall, insulation), and hygienization of the area. For a situation like yours, this is not a DIY task.
