Is AC mold an urgent professional fix?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be blowing out a really damp, earthy smell that’s settled into our guest bedroom closet. I just pulled out a suitcase to pack for a trip and found several of my winter jackets covered in black and green fuzzy spots. This has probably been building up since the humidity started rising a couple of months ago. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle the closet myself with bleach?

Based on your description, this is an urgent situation requiring professional intervention. The damp, earthy smell from your AC unit and the visible mold growth on clothing are clear indicators of a significant microbial contamination within your air conditioning system and the dwelling space it serves.

Attempting to clean this yourself with bleach is strongly discouraged. Bleach is ineffective on porous materials like drywall and wood, and its high water content can actually feed the mold root system, causing it to return stronger. More critically, disturbing the mold by cleaning the closet yourself will aerosolize a high concentration of spores. These spores will be redistributed throughout your apartment via the AC airflow, contaminating other areas and posing a serious inhalation risk.

In Dubai's climate, where high humidity and year-round AC use create perfect conditions for condensation and mold growth, this problem will not resolve itself. The AC unit itself is the likely amplification site and requires a specialized hygienization process to eliminate the contamination at its source.

This is not a surface cleaning issue; it is an indoor air quality emergency. I recommend you immediately schedule a professional inspection and mold testing. Our certified technicians at Saniservice can identify the species, assess the extent of contamination within the ductwork and building envelope, and execute a controlled remediation plan following UAE best practices.
