How to permanently remove black mold in humid climates?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We live in an older building in Jumeirah and it’s been incredibly humid this winter. I’m worried it’s spreading inside the wall. What’s the most effective way to kill this for good and prevent it from coming back next season?

The health symptoms you describe are a significant concern and strongly correlate with exposure to black mold (Stachybotrys chartarum), especially in children. Given the location behind a wardrobe and the current high humidity levels in Dubai, you are likely dealing with a condensation issue, a common problem in older buildings where exterior walls lack proper insulation and year-round AC use creates thermal bridges.

Permanent removal in our climate requires a multi-step, technical approach. First, do not attempt to clean it with bleach, as this will only discolour the surface and release more spores. The most effective method to kill mold for good is to address both the infestation and the moisture source. For a contained area, a solution of distilled white vinegar or a proprietary, non-bleach-based fungicidal cleaner approved for porous surfaces can be applied after physically removing the visible growth with a HEPA-filtered vacuum. However, your suspicion that it's inside the wall is critical. If the mold has penetrated the gypsum board or insulation, the entire affected section of drywall must be removed and discarded under containment to prevent cross-contamination.

Prevention is paramount. After remediation, the area must be treated with an antimicrobial coating. To prevent recurrence, you must control the indoor humidity. Maintain your AC system, ensuring it is serviced regularly to remove excess moisture from the air. Use a standalone dehumidifier, especially during the humid winter months. Improve air circulation behind furniture by leaving a gap between it and the wall.

For a case involving health symptoms and potential wall infiltration, a professional inspection is absolutely essential. We use borescopes to inspect inside wall cavities and advanced air and surface sampling to identify the species and spore count, which guides the remediation protocol as per Dubai Municipality guidelines. Improper handling can exacerbate the problem. I strongly recommend you contact our certified team at Saniservice for a comprehensive assessment.
