Should I remove black mold myself or hire a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit onto the wall behind the wardrobe, and now I've pulled it out, there's a pretty big patch of black mold spreading on the skirting board and wall. We've lived here for 2 years in Jumeirah Village Circle and only just spotted it. I'm worried about my family breathing that in, but I have no idea what it costs to get this professionally treated here. Is a small job like this something I should attempt to handle myself with bleach, or is it definitely worth calling a mold removal company in Dubai?

Based on the description of your situation in JVC, I strongly advise against attempting to remove this black mold yourself. A leaking AC unit causing a hidden mold colony is a serious issue, and the visible patch on the skirting board is likely just the tip of the iceberg. The mold has likely penetrated the porous surfaces of the drywall and backing material.

The UAE's hot and humid climate is a primary catalyst for mold growth, especially when condensation from AC units is present. Using bleach is a common but ineffective DIY mistake. It may superficially bleach the visible mold but will not kill the roots (hyphae) penetrating the wall. Furthermore, bleach is primarily water, which can actually feed the mold colony and cause it to regrow more aggressively. Disturbing the colony without proper containment and professional-grade HEPA filtration will aerosolize the toxic spores, significantly increasing the risk of respiratory issues for your family.

For a situation like this, a professional inspection and remediation are critical. Our certified technicians would first conduct a thorough assessment to determine the full extent of the contamination, often using moisture meters and borescopes. The remediation process involves strict containment with negative air pressure, safe removal of affected porous materials (skirting, drywall), and antimicrobial treatment of all surfaces. The final step is a post-remediation verification test to ensure the air quality is safe.
