Can I remove wardrobe mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom wardrobe, which is on the outside wall of our villa in Mirdif, has started to get these small black speckles on the back wall and our clothes have a faint damp smell. It’s been like this since the humidity really spiked a couple of months ago. Is this something I can tackle myself with a vinegar spray from the supermarket, or is it time to call in a professional mold inspection company?

Based on your description of black speckles and a persistent damp smell in your Mirdif villa's wardrobe, this is a classic case of mold growth exacerbated by Dubai's high humidity and the temperature differential caused by year-round air conditioning. The outside wall location is a significant concern, as it can be prone to condensation, a primary moisture source for mold.

While a vinegar solution can temporarily remove superficial, visible mold on a non-porous surface, it is not a solution for your situation. The mold on the wall's surface is merely the fruiting body; the root system (hyphae) penetrates deep into the porous building materials (drywall, plaster). DIY cleaning will not eradicate this embedded growth, and the mold will return. More critically, disturbing the mold without proper containment and air filtration can aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination throughout your bedroom and HVAC system, posing a health risk.

A professional inspection is strongly recommended. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters, thermal imaging cameras, and borescopes to identify the exact moisture source—whether it's interstitial condensation, a minor leak, or a construction defect. We then conduct air and surface sampling to identify the mold species and concentration, which is crucial for determining the correct remediation protocol as per UAE standards and AWMA guidelines. This scientific approach ensures the problem is solved at its root, protecting your property and health.
