Safest way to remove bathroom mold with a toddler?« Back to Previous Page

Our family bathroom in our Jumeirah apartment doesn’t get much sunlight and the ventilation is terrible. Lately, my toddler has been having a persistent cough and I’ve spotted black speckles growing along the grout in the shower. I’m really worried this is the cause. What’s the safest and most effective way to get rid of it for good, especially with a young child in the house?

The situation you've described in your Jumeirah apartment is unfortunately very common here in Dubai. The combination of high ambient humidity and constant air conditioning creates significant condensation, particularly in poorly ventilated bathrooms. The black speckles you see on the grout are almost certainly mold, and your toddler's persistent cough is a strong indicator that this is a serious indoor air quality issue.

For a safe and effective removal, especially with a young child, I strongly advise against DIY chemical cleaners. These can release harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and disturb the mold, causing spores to become airborne and spread. The safest initial step is to have a certified professional inspection. We use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to identify the full extent of the moisture intrusion and air sampling to determine the spore count and species, which is critical for assessing health risks and planning remediation.

For a permanent solution, the underlying cause—excess moisture—must be addressed. This involves improving ventilation, potentially installing a more powerful exhaust fan, and sealing grout lines to prevent moisture penetration. Remediation must follow strict protocols, including containment of the affected area with polyethylene sheeting and negative air pressure to prevent cross-contamination, and the use of HEPA-filtered air scrubbers to clean the air. All antimicrobial agents used must be approved for use in occupied spaces and safe for children.

Given the health implications for your toddler, this requires a professional approach. I recommend you contact our team at Saniservice for a comprehensive inspection and a tailored remediation plan. You can reach us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or hello@saniservice.com to schedule an assessment.
