How urgent is mold under AC unit to clean?« Back to Previous Page

Our AC unit in the bedroom has been leaking a bit of water onto the carpet for the last two weeks. I just pulled back the corner and found a patch of black and green mold about the size of a dinner plate underneath. With this humid weather, how urgent is it that I get this professionally cleaned before it becomes a major health risk?

The situation you describe is extremely urgent and requires immediate professional attention. In Dubai's climate, where high external humidity forces AC units to work extensively, condensation leaks are common. This creates a perpetual damp environment, which is an ideal breeding ground for mold. The presence of a visible patch of black and green mold, likely Aspergillus or Stachybotrys (black mold), indicates a significant and established colony that has been growing unseen for some time.

The health risks are not to be underestimated. Continuous exposure to mold spores from a bedroom AC can lead to severe respiratory issues, allergic reactions, sinus congestion, and aggravated asthma symptoms. The proximity to where you sleep, spending 6-8 hours nightly, greatly increases exposure.

Do not attempt to clean this yourself. Disturbing the mold without proper containment will aerosolize millions of spores, contaminating your entire bedroom's air supply and HVAC system. The carpet and underlying padding are likely saturated, acting as a reservoir that standard cleaning cannot remediate.

The remediation process must be handled by a certified professional. It involves isolating the area with negative air pressure, safely removing the contaminated carpet and padding, HEPA vacuuming, and employing antimicrobial treatments to eliminate the root colony. The AC unit itself must also be inspected, as the internal drip pan and ducts are probable secondary contamination sources.

For a situation of this severity in the UAE, we strongly recommend you contact a certified mold remediation specialist immediately.
