Mold in Dubai closet: DIY or professional cost?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It’s been worse since the humidity spiked last month. I'm worried it's spreading but have no idea what this kind of remediation costs here. Is this a DIY job with bleach, or should I just call a professional company and what's a reasonable price to expect for a small area?

Based on the climate in Dubai, this is a very common issue. The combination of high humidity, especially during the summer months, and year-round air conditioning creates significant condensation potential in enclosed spaces like closets, leading to ideal conditions for mold growth.

Using bleach is not recommended. It is a superficial biocide that only removes the surface discoloration and is ineffective on porous materials. More critically, it does not address the underlying moisture source, so the mold will almost certainly return. For a proper remediation, the root cause—likely condensation from the AC system or a minor leak—must be identified and resolved.

For a small, contained patch in a closet, a professional remediation should be a straightforward process. It typically involves isolating the area, HEPA vacuuming, abrasive cleaning of the affected surfaces, and applying an EPA-approved antimicrobial solution to prevent regrowth. Given the specifics of your Jumeirah villa, you can expect a reasonable price for a small area like this to range from AED 1,000 to AED 2,500, depending on the extent of the growth and the required containment measures.

I strongly recommend a professional inspection. Our certified inspectors can conduct a thorough assessment, including moisture mapping and air quality testing, to determine the exact cause and full extent of the contamination, which often spreads behind walls.
