Black mold from AC leak: DIY fix or professional needed?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah seems to be leaking a little water onto the wall, and now I'm seeing these small black spots spreading in the corner behind the wardrobe. I wiped it with vinegar but it came back even darker after just a couple of days. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach or a special spray, or do I need to call one of those professional mold removal companies here?

Based on the symptoms you've described—water leakage from an AC unit in Jumeirah resulting in recurring black spots—this is a classic case of moisture-induced mold growth, and it requires a professional approach.

The high humidity and constant AC use in Dubai create a perfect environment for mold, particularly when condensation or leaks provide a direct moisture source. Your attempt with vinegar is a common DIY method; however, vinegar only removes surface discoloration and does not address the root cause: the moisture problem and the hyphae (root structure) penetrating the porous wall material. Using bleach is strongly discouraged. It is mostly water, which can actually feed the mold growth deeper within the wall, and its fumes can be hazardous in an enclosed space.

The spreading and darkening you observed confirm the colony is active and thriving. For a proper resolution, the AC leak must be repaired first to eliminate the moisture source. Then, the affected building materials require assessment. Mold remediation is not just cleaning the surface; it involves containing the area to prevent cross-contamination, safely removing contaminated porous materials like drywall, and using specialized equipment like HEPA vacuums and antimicrobial agents to ensure complete eradication.

In the UAE, professional remediation companies like ours follow strict protocols to ensure the environment is returned to a safe and healthy state. For a confirmed case like this, especially in a living space, a professional inspection is not just recommended, it is essential.
