How to dry wet carpet and prevent mold from AC leak?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be leaking a little water onto the carpet in my bedroom. I noticed a small dark patch a few days ago and now there's a definite musty smell every time I walk in. I’m worried this is the start of a mold problem. What's the best way to dry this out and clean it to make sure it doesn't spread or come back?

The situation you've described is a classic precursor to a significant mold problem, exacerbated by the high humidity and constant AC use typical of the Dubai climate. The musty odor is a strong indicator that microbial growth has already begun within the carpet fibers and underlying padding.

Immediate action is required. First, address the source: turn off the AC unit to prevent further leakage and contact your building's maintenance team to repair the condensate drain line or drip pan issue. For drying, simply airing out the room is insufficient due to the ambient humidity. You must extract as much water as possible using a wet-dry vacuum. Then, utilize high-velocity air movers and industrial-grade dehumidifiers to aggressively dry the area; household fans are not adequate for this task. The carpet must be lifted to dry and inspect the subfloor beneath, as this is where hidden mold colonies develop.

However, given the presence of a musty smell, it is highly likely that mold has already established itself. Disturbing it through DIY cleaning can aerosolize spores and contaminate other areas of your apartment. Cleaning the surface with antimicrobial agents will not address the root infestation within the padding.

For a definitive assessment and to prevent recurrence, a professional inspection is crucial. We use moisture meters, thermal imaging, and air/surface sampling to identify the exact species and extent of contamination, in line with Dubai Municipality's public health and safety guidelines. Saniservice provides comprehensive mold inspection and remediation services to safely resolve such issues.
