Bleach mold or call a pro for hidden leak?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, and it seems to be spreading. I think it might be from a small hidden leak in the AC unit that runs through that wall, as the closet wall always feels a bit damp. My husband wants to just scrub it with bleach, but I'm worried it's a bigger issue. Is this something we can safely handle ourselves with products from ACE, or should we just call a professional mold remediation company in Dubai to check it out?

Based on the symptoms you've described—a recurring black mold patch in a damp closet with a suspected AC leak—this is a situation that warrants a professional inspection and not a DIY bleach treatment.

In the UAE's high-humidity climate, mold is a persistent issue, and visible growth is often just the tip of the iceberg. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and wood, as it only removes the surface discoloration while leaving the root structure intact. More critically, it does not address the underlying moisture source. Your suspicion of a hidden AC condensate leak is highly plausible; these are common here due to clogged drain lines or faulty insulation, creating a constant source of moisture perfect for mold proliferation.

Attempting to clean it yourself risks cross-contaminating other areas of your home and exposing yourself to a high concentration of spores, which can cause significant health issues. Dubai Municipality has guidelines for healthy indoor environments, and improper handling can exacerbate the problem.

A certified professional will first conduct a thorough inspection, including moisture mapping and possibly air quality testing, to identify the full extent of the infestation and the exact source of the water intrusion. The remediation process then involves containing the area, safely removing contaminated materials, treating the space with EPA-approved biocides, and most importantly, resolving the leak at its source.

For a confirmed leak and spreading growth, I strongly recommend calling a professional. You can contact our team at Saniservice for a comprehensive assessment at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or hello@saniservice.com.
