Can I remove recurring shower mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black mold spots starting to spread in the corner where the shower meets the ceiling. I tried wiping it with a bleach spray but it came back after a couple of weeks, and the damp, earthy smell is getting stronger. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger product from ACE Hardware, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning service here in Dubai?

Based on the description of recurring black mold and a persistent damp, earthy smell, this is a situation that warrants a professional inspection. In Dubai's climate, with its extreme humidity and constant air conditioning use, bathrooms are prime locations for persistent mold growth. The condensation from hot showers combined with the cold surface of an AC-chilled ceiling creates a perfect environment for mold to thrive, often deep within the building materials.

Your attempt with a bleach-based cleaner is a common mistake. While it may remove the surface discoloration, bleach is primarily water, which can actually feed the root structure (hyphae) of the mold growing within the porous ceiling plaster or paint. This is why the growth returns stronger, often accompanied by that telltale musty odor indicating active microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs).

For a lasting solution, the root cause—excess moisture—must be addressed. A professional assessment is crucial to determine the extent of the infestation behind the surface and to identify any potential ventilation issues. We use industrial-grade HEPA filtration, EPA-approved antimicrobial agents, and techniques like dry ice blasting to eradicate the colony at its source without spreading spores. Furthermore, we can advise on humidity control measures specific to UAE villas and apartments to prevent recurrence.

For a definitive solution and to ensure your family's health, I strongly recommend a certified inspection. Contact our team at Saniservice for a comprehensive assessment. Call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.
