Is AC mold causing our constant headaches and stuffy noses?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom AC unit in our Jumeirah apartment has been leaking a bit for the last couple of months, and now we’re starting to see black specks around the vent. Since it started, both my wife and I have had constant stuffy noses and headaches that just won’t go away. Is this black mold from the AC, and could it really be causing these health issues?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that the black specks you are observing are indeed mold growth, and it is very likely the cause of your persistent headaches and stuffy noses. This is a common and serious issue we encounter in Dubai, particularly in areas like Jumeirah.

The constant leakage from your AC unit creates a perfect microenvironment for mold, especially Stachybotrys chartarum (often referred to as "black mold") and other species like Aspergillus. The UAE's high humidity, combined with condensation from air conditioning systems, provides the ideal breeding ground. When the AC operates, it aerosolizes these mold spores and mycotoxins, distributing them throughout your bedroom. Inhaling these contaminants directly causes the respiratory irritation and neurological symptoms you are both experiencing.

This is not an issue to take lightly. The UAE's regulatory framework, particularly the Dubai Municipality's public health and safety codes, mandates that indoor air quality hazards be addressed promptly to protect occupant health. Attempting to clean this yourself is strongly discouraged, as improper handling can cause a significant release of spores, exacerbating the contamination and your health problems.

A professional inspection is absolutely necessary. Our certified mold inspectors will conduct a comprehensive assessment, including air and surface sampling to identify the specific mold species and the extent of the contamination within the AC ductwork and the room itself. This evidence-based approach is critical for formulating an effective remediation plan.
