Should I remove black mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our AC in the bedroom has been leaking a bit for the last couple of weeks and I just pulled back the corner of the carpet and found a patch of black mold about the size of a dinner plate. With this humidity, I'm worried it's going to spread like crazy. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with bleach?

Based on the scenario you've described, with an AC leak and visible black mold under the carpet, I strongly advise against attempting remediation yourself and recommend you call a professional immediately. This is considered an urgent situation.

The persistent moisture from the AC leak, combined with Dubai's high ambient humidity, creates a perfect incubator for mold growth. What you see on the surface is often just the "fruit"; the root system (mycelium) will have penetrated deep into the carpet backing and likely the underlying concrete slab. Surface cleaning with bleach is ineffective and potentially hazardous. Bleach is mostly water, which can feed the mold roots you can't see, and its fumes can cause severe respiratory irritation in an enclosed space. More critically, disturbing the mold by pulling the carpet can release a massive number of spores into your bedroom's air, significantly increasing your exposure and the risk of cross-contamination.

In the UAE, proper mold remediation is not just about cleaning; it's about solving the moisture source and following strict containment protocols to protect the rest of the property. DIY attempts often exacerbate the problem, leading to greater health risks and higher ultimate remediation costs.

For a situation like this, a professional inspection is non-negotiable. We use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to trace the full extent of the water damage and mold growth, set up negative air pressure containment to prevent spore spread, and utilize HEPA filtration and approved antimicrobial solutions for safe, guaranteed removal.

Do not delay. For a certified assessment and remediation, please call our specialists at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. Saniservice is equipped to handle this safely and in full compliance with local standards.
