Is black mold causing my kids' persistent cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing constantly for the past month and I’ve just discovered patches of black mold behind our bedroom wardrobe in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment. The wall feels damp to the touch and the room always smells a bit stale, even with the AC running. I'm really worried their allergies are being caused by this. Should I be taking them to a doctor immediately to get checked out?

Based on the symptoms you've described—persistent coughing, a stale odor, and visible black mold growth on a damp wall—it is highly probable that the mold is a significant contributing factor to your children's health issues. In Dubai's climate, where high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for condensation and microbial growth behind furniture and on cold walls, such scenarios are unfortunately common.

The damp wall indicates an ongoing moisture issue, which must be addressed as the primary cause. The black discoloration could be Stachybotrys chartarum (often referred to as "toxic black mold") or another species like Aspergillus niger, both of which are known to produce mycotoxins and allergens that can cause severe respiratory irritation, allergic reactions, and persistent coughing, especially in children.

You should absolutely consult a pediatrician to have your children evaluated for mold exposure and to rule out other potential causes. Simultaneously, a professional inspection is critical. DIY cleaning is not advised for confirmed growth of this nature, as improper handling can aerosolize spores and exacerbate the contamination. Our certified inspectors use tools like moisture meters, thermal imaging cameras, and air sampling to identify the full extent of the infestation and the moisture source, in full compliance with Dubai Municipality's public health and safety guidelines.
