Is black mold behind my wardrobe dangerous for kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's because of the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived here in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from the humidity. I tried wiping it but it just smeared and came back darker. What's the safest and most effective way to get rid of it for good, and should I be calling a professional company here in Dubai to handle it?

Yes, black mold growth behind a wardrobe is a significant concern, especially for children who are more vulnerable to its effects. The black spots you described are likely Stachybotrys chartarum, a toxigenic mold that thrives in the persistent damp conditions common in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. When disturbed, it releases mycotoxins and spores into the air, which can cause or exacerbate respiratory issues, including the persistent coughing you've observed in your kids, as well as allergic reactions, headaches, and fatigue.

Your attempt to wipe it likely aggravated the situation by dispersing these harmful particles. For a small, contained area (less than 1 square meter), a thorough DIY cleaning with a HEPA vacuum, microfiber cloth, and a professional-grade fungicide (not bleach) might suffice. However, given its location behind a heavy fixture and its recurrent nature, this indicates a persistent moisture issue that you haven't addressed. The mold's root system (hyphae) is probably deep within the wall.

For a permanent solution, I strongly recommend a professional inspection and remediation. In the UAE, companies like ours follow strict guidelines from Dubai Municipality and other relevant authorities to ensure safe, effective removal. We conduct a comprehensive assessment to identify the exact moisture source—often a leaking AC condensation line, capillary rise from the slab, or insufficient ventilation—and then perform containment, HEPA filtration, and antimicrobial treatment to eliminate the colony and prevent recurrence, ensuring the safety of your family.
