How to safely treat and prevent black mold in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived here in Jumeirah Park for 2 years and just noticed it, but the musty smell has probably been there for a while. What’s the best way to treat this safely and how can I stop it from coming back, especially with our humid summers?

Thank you for your question. Your description of black spots accompanied by a musty smell and respiratory issues in children is a classic presentation of a mold infestation, a common issue in Dubai's climate. The high humidity, especially during summer, combined with year-round air conditioning, creates significant condensation issues behind furniture and within wall cavities, providing the perfect environment for mold growth like Stachybotrys chartarum (black mold).

Safely treating this requires a methodical approach. First, do not attempt to clean it with bleach, as this can agitate the spores and exacerbate the health issues. For a small, contained area, you may use a solution of distilled white vinegar or a specialized EPA-approved fungicide, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, given the symptoms your children are experiencing, the potential for the colony to be more extensive behind the wall is high. Disturbing it without proper containment can lead to a significant release of mycotoxins into your living space.

Prevention is critical and directly tied to moisture control. Immediately move the wardrobe away from the wall to improve air circulation. Use a dehumidifier in the room to maintain humidity levels below 50%. Ensure your AC unit is serviced regularly to prevent condensation buildup and that all AC drain lines are unobstructed.

For a definitive solution and to ensure the health of your family, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. We use thermal imaging cameras and borescopes to identify hidden moisture sources and the full extent of the growth. Our remediation process follows UAE/Dubai municipality guidelines for environmental health and safety, employing industrial-grade HEPA filtration for containment and safe removal.
