Can I safely remove black mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and it’s gotten worse since the humidity spiked last week. I’m worried about our health, but also don’t want to call maintenance for something I could maybe clean myself. Is this something I can safely tackle with bleach and a scrub brush, or do I need to get a professional to look at it?

Based on the details you've provided, this is a situation that warrants professional assessment. The mold's location on an exterior wall suggests a potential moisture intrusion issue, which is a common problem in Dubai due to the high humidity and building envelope challenges. A patch that has worsened with a spike in humidity is a significant red flag, indicating an active moisture source that DIY cleaning will not address.

While small, superficial spots on non-porous surfaces can sometimes be managed with a bleach solution (10% bleach to 90% water), this is not a long-term solution and is not recommended for porous materials like drywall. Bleach only removes the surface discoloration and does not kill the mold roots (hyphae) within the material. Furthermore, improper scrubbing can aerosolize spores, contaminating other areas of your home and posing a health risk, especially to those with respiratory conditions.

In the UAE, improper remediation that leads to cross-contamination can violate health and safety standards for residential buildings. A professional inspection is crucial to identify the exact species of mold (some black-colored molds are highly toxigenic) and, more importantly, to locate and rectify the source of the moisture, which could be a leaking pipe, condensation from AC ducts, or a breach in the building's vapor barrier.

For a thorough, permanent solution that protects your health and property, I strongly recommend a certified inspection. Our team at Saniservice uses moisture meters, thermal imaging, and air sampling to provide a complete diagnosis and a compliant remediation plan.
