Black mold in closet: DIY bleach or call professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black speckles appearing in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right on the wall. It started after the recent humidity spike and it's starting to smell a bit damp in there. Is this something I can tackle myself with a bleach spray from the supermarket, or do I need to call in a professional cleaner?

Based on the description of black speckles appearing after a recent humidity spike and the accompanying damp smell, it is highly likely you are dealing with active mold growth. In Dubai's climate, where high humidity and constant air conditioning create significant condensation risks, closets on exterior walls are a common problem area.
Using a supermarket bleach spray is strongly discouraged. Bleach is primarily water, which can feed the mold roots deep within the drywall. It only bleaches the surface appearance without addressing the underlying colony, leading to rapid regrowth. More critically, bleaching mold can cause it to release a large number of spores and mycotoxins into the air as a defense mechanism, significantly worsening your indoor air quality and potential health risks. For a suspected black mold issue, a professional inspection is the recommended first step. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to identify the exact source of the moisture intrusion—whether it's condensation from the AC, a small leak, or capillary rise from the slab. We then take air and surface samples to identify the species, which is crucial for determining the correct remediation protocol, as some types require more stringent containment procedures. Attempting a DIY fix often spreads the contamination. Proper remediation involves isolating the area with negative air pressure, safely removing affected porous materials like drywall, and using specialized EPA-approved biocides—not bleach—to treat the area.
