Could mold in clothes be causing my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for a couple of weeks and we can't figure out why. I just pulled out a stack of winter clothes from the back of the wardrobe in our master bedroom and found a bunch of them covered in black and green fuzzy spots. It's been so humid lately even with the AC running constantly. Could this mold be the reason for their bad coughs and sore throats?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that the mold growth on the stored clothing is a significant contributor to your children's persistent respiratory symptoms. The black and green fuzzy spots are characteristic of common indoor molds like Aspergillus or Penicillium. When disturbed, these molds release microscopic spores and mycotoxins into the air, which, when inhaled, can cause chronic coughing, sore throats, and other allergic or irritant reactions, particularly in children whose immune systems are more sensitive.

The conditions you describe—high humidity despite constant AC use—are a classic catalyst for mold growth in the UAE climate. Our AC systems, while cooling, often create significant temperature differentials that lead to condensation in poorly ventilated spaces like closets and behind furniture. Winter clothes, packed away while retaining trace moisture from the previous season, become the perfect food source for mold in this damp, dark environment.

Immediate action is required. Do not attempt to clean these clothes with household products, as this can aerosolize the spores and worsen the contamination. The affected items should be carefully sealed in plastic bags and removed from the home. The wardrobe and the entire bedroom require a professional assessment. The visible growth on the clothes is likely just the tip of the iceberg; spores will have contaminated the surrounding area, and the source of the moisture enabling the growth must be identified.

For the health of your family and a permanent solution, a certified mold inspection is essential. Our teams at Saniservice are trained to Dubai Municipality standards and use advanced equipment like thermal imaging and moisture meters to identify the full extent of the problem and its source. We then execute a controlled remediation process to ensure the environment is safe. I strongly recommend you contact us for a professional evaluation.
