What's the best local product to kill bathroom mold?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in my Marina apartment's master bathroom has started turning black in the corners, especially behind the toilet where it's hard to reach. It’s gotten much worse since the humidity kicked in a couple of weeks ago. I try to keep the exhaust fan on, but the smell is still musty.
What’s the most effective product I can find locally to kill this mold and stop it from coming back so quickly?

Based on your description, the black discoloration in your Marina apartment's bathroom grout is almost certainly active mold growth, exacerbated by the UAE's extreme humidity and the micro-climate created by your AC system. The area behind the toilet is a classic trouble spot due to limited airflow and potential condensation from the cold water tank.
For a localized, DIY approach, the most effective and readily available product in the UAE is a hydrogen peroxide-based cleaner (often found at ACE Hardware or Carrefour) or a dedicated grout haze and mold remover. Chlorine bleach is not recommended for porous surfaces like grout; it only bleaches the surface color and does not kill the root system, leading to rapid regrowth. A product containing hydrogen peroxide or an alkyl ammonium chloride compound will be more effective at penetrating and killing the mold at its source. However, it is critical to understand that surface cleaning is a temporary solution. The persistent musty odor indicates a deeper issue, likely within the wall cavity or under the tiles, which DIY products cannot address. In Dubai's climate, this is often caused by a failed shower seal or a hidden plumbing leak, creating a constant moisture source. For a problem that is recurring and accompanied by odor, a professional inspection is strongly advised. Our certified inspectors use borescopes and moisture meters to identify the hidden source of moisture. Without rectifying this, the mold will continue to return. Saniservice offers comprehensive mold inspection and remediation services, ensuring the problem is solved permanently and in line with Dubai Municipality's health and safety standards.
