Can I remove bathroom mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in my bathroom shower has been getting these black spots for a while, and now it's spreading to the ceiling. It's the ensuite in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle, and the window is tiny so the humidity just sits there after every shower. Is this something I can tackle myself with a bleach spray from the supermarket, or do I need to call one of those professional mold removal companies here in Dubai?

Based on your description of recurring and spreading black mold in the grout and on the ceiling of your JVC ensuite, this is a situation that warrants a professional assessment. The climate in Dubai, particularly the high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use, creates a perfect breeding ground for mold. A tiny, poorly ventilated bathroom exacerbates this significantly.

While a supermarket bleach solution can remove surface discoloration on non-porous surfaces, it is a temporary and often ineffective fix for porous materials like grout and drywall. Bleach does not address the root cause—the persistent moisture—and the mold hyphae (roots) will remain deep within the material, leading to rapid regrowth. Furthermore, improper use of bleach can release harmful spores into the air and damage surfaces.

For a persistent issue that is visibly spreading to the ceiling, a DIY approach is not recommended. The potential for hidden moisture damage within the wall or ceiling cavity is high. A professional inspection is crucial to determine the full extent of the contamination, identify the moisture source, and implement a safe, effective remediation plan that complies with local hygiene standards.
