Black mold in closet: DIY or call a pro in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom walk-in closet has had a strange damp smell for a couple of months, and I finally moved everything out to find black, speckled patches spreading on the back wall behind the shelves. With the humidity lately, it seems to be getting worse, and I'm worried about our clothes and health. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach and a mask, or do I absolutely need to call a professional cleaning company here in Dubai?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of mold growth exacerbated by Dubai's high humidity and the microclimate created by a confined, poorly ventilated space like a closet. The black, speckled patches are a significant concern.

Attempting a DIY remediation with bleach is strongly discouraged. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall, as it only removes the surface discoloration while leaving the root network (mycelium) intact. It can also exacerbate the problem by introducing moisture. Furthermore, without proper personal protective equipment (PPE) like a P100 respirator and containment procedures, disturbing the mold will aerosolize spores, drastically increasing your indoor air contamination and potential health risks.

The damp smell indicates an ongoing moisture issue. In Dubai, this is often due to condensation from AC systems, capillary rise from the slab in older buildings, or a hidden plumbing leak. Effective remediation requires not only removing the visible mold but also identifying and eliminating this source of moisture; otherwise, regrowth is guaranteed within weeks.

Given the spread you've described and the potential for the mold to have penetrated the wall cavity, this requires professional assessment. UAE regulations and best practices, such as those outlined by the Dubai Municipality, recommend certified professionals for remediation to ensure it is handled safely and effectively, protecting both the building's integrity and occupant health.

We strongly recommend a professional inspection. Our certified experts at Saniservice can conduct a comprehensive assessment using moisture meters and thermal imaging to pinpoint the moisture source, assess the full extent of contamination, and provide a scientifically-backed remediation plan.
