Can I clean black mold from AC leak myself?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit onto the carpet behind the headboard for a couple of months. I finally moved the bed and found a bunch of black, fuzzy patches on the wall and skirting board that smell really damp. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this. Is this something I can clean with bleach myself, or do I absolutely need to call a professional cleaning company?

Based on the description of a persistent leak over several months and the presence of fuzzy black patches with a musty odor, this is a significant mold colony, likely Stachybotrys chartarum or another toxigenic species. The Dubai climate, with its extreme humidity and year-round AC use, creates a perfect breeding ground for such growth, especially when condensation or leaks occur.

While small surface mold on non-porous materials can sometimes be addressed with a bleach solution (10% bleach to 90% water), your situation is not a DIY case. The mold has deeply penetrated the porous drywall and skirting board, which cannot be effectively cleaned. Bleach will only bleach the surface color but will not kill the root system (hyphae) within the material, leading to rapid regrowth. More critically, improper cleaning can aerosolize toxic mold spores, contaminating your entire bedroom and HVAC system, posing serious health risks.

UAE regulations and best practices for indoor environmental quality strongly recommend professional assessment and remediation for cases of this magnitude. We must identify the exact species and the full extent of the contamination, which often spreads behind walls.

For a proper resolution, the water source must be fixed, the contaminated porous materials must be safely removed under containment, and the area must be professionally remediated and hygienized. I strongly advise against handling this yourself.
