How to remove closet mold and prevent it in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa has a faint damp smell, and I just found a few black spots on a couple of leather handbags stored at the back. We run the AC constantly but it’s the one area that never gets much air flow. What’s the most effective way to treat this small area and prevent it from coming back without having to call in a professional straight away?

Based on the conditions you've described in your Jumeirah villa, you are likely dealing with a localized mold growth issue, a common problem in Dubai due to the high ambient humidity and the constant cooling cycle of AC units which can create significant temperature differentials and condensation in poorly ventilated spaces like closets.

For immediate, contained treatment, you must address both the visible growth and the underlying moisture. First, wearing an N95 mask and gloves, carefully remove the affected handbags and any other contents for individual cleaning. For the closet itself, a solution of diluted detergent (not bleach, as it does not kill the mold roots and can exacerbate moisture) can be used to scrub the affected surfaces. Follow this with a wipe-down using a diluted vinegar or a specialized EPA-approved fungicide. It is critical to dry the area completely immediately after cleaning using fans and a dehumidifier. The leather goods should be professionally cleaned to prevent spores from being reintroduced.

Prevention is paramount. The root cause is the lack of air circulation and likely a lower temperature in the room compared to the closet, causing condensation. To prevent recurrence, ensure the closet is not overpacked. Leave space between the wall and your belongings. Leave the closet door ajar for several hours a day to equalize temperature and humidity with the room. Consider installing a battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber unit inside the closet. Most importantly, have your AC system serviced to ensure it is draining correctly and operating at an efficient humidity removal level, as a faulty unit is a primary contributor to indoor mold issues in the UAE.

While this is a protocol for a minor issue, mold can often be more extensive than visible. If the smell persists or you see growth returning, the problem may be within the wall or HVAC system. For a definitive assessment and to ensure the health of your indoor environment, a professional inspection is strongly advised.
