Can I clean black mold myself or hire a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall and seems to be spreading a bit, and the room has felt more humid lately despite the AC running. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning company to handle it?

Based on your description, this is a situation that warrants professional attention. The presence of black-colored mold, its apparent spreading, and the associated rise in humidity are significant red flags. While small, isolated spots of surface mildew can sometimes be addressed by a homeowner, your case involves a stored clothing area and a potential moisture issue, which elevates the risk.

In Dubai's climate, year-round AC use and high external humidity create perfect conditions for condensation within walls, especially if there's a minor leak or insufficient insulation. Applying supermarket bleach is strongly discouraged. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall, as it only bleaches the surface mold while leaving the roots intact. More critically, it can aggravate the situation by adding moisture. Bleach also poses serious health risks when improperly used, releasing harmful fumes.

UAE regulations, particularly from Dubai Municipality, have strict guidelines for mold assessment and remediation to ensure occupant safety and prevent cross-contamination. A certified professional will first conduct a thorough inspection to identify the moisture source—which is absolutely critical—and the exact species of mold, as some types are more hazardous than others. They will then contain the area, use professional-grade biocides approved for use in the UAE, and safely remove any contaminated materials like affected drywall or insulation.

For a proper diagnosis and permanent solution, I recommend a professional inspection. Contact our team at Saniservice for a comprehensive assessment.
