How to remove and prevent mold in master closet?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has a faint damp smell and I just found a few small patches of black mold on a couple of leather handbags stored in the back. The dehumidifier in our Marina apartment runs constantly, but it's clearly not enough for that enclosed space, especially during this humid summer. What's the best way to tackle the existing mold and what can I add, like a specific type of dehumidifier or moisture absorber, to prevent it from coming back in a closet?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of localized mold growth driven by Dubai's extreme humidity and inadequate air circulation within an enclosed space. Even with a dehumidifier running, closets on interior walls are prime targets due to stagnant, humid air becoming trapped.

For the existing mold, immediate action is required. Do not attempt to clean the leather handbags with household cleaners like bleach, as this can set the stains and damage the material. For porous materials like leather, professional cleaning is often the only way to fully remove mold spores and associated odors. The affected area within the closet must be thoroughly inspected and cleaned using EPA-approved antimicrobial solutions, not just wiped down, to address the root colony and prevent aerosolization of spores.

For prevention, a standard dehumidifier is insufficient for a confined closet. You require a targeted solution. I recommend installing a compact, electric desiccant dehumidifier specifically designed for small spaces like wardrobes and cabinets. These are far more effective in Dubai's climate than refrigerant models, especially in the cooler confines of an AC-cooled room. Additionally, incorporate moisture-absorbing crystals (calcium chloride) in breathable containers as a secondary passive defense. Crucially, you must improve air circulation. This can be achieved by leaving the closet doors ajar periodically, installing a small battery-operated vent fan, or having a professional add a supply air vent from your AC system directly into the closet space.

Given that the mold is already growing on stored contents, a professional inspection is strongly advised to assess the extent of the issue and ensure it is remediated to Dubai Municipality standards. Our certified team at Saniservice can conduct a comprehensive moisture and mold assessment to identify the precise cause and implement a permanent solution.
