Is black mold from AC leak causing our cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing nonstop since the start of the summer and we can't figure out why. I just pulled back the carpet in our bedroom in Jumeirah and found a huge patch of black mold underneath, probably from a slow AC leak. Is this definitely what's making us sick and how dangerous is it to clean up myself?

Based on the symptoms you describe and your discovery in Jumeirah, it is highly probable that the black mold growth from the AC leak is the primary cause of your family's persistent coughing. This is a common and serious health issue in Dubai due to our high humidity and year-round reliance on air conditioning, which creates perfect conditions for condensation and hidden mold growth.

The black substance is likely Stachybotrys chartarum, a toxigenic mold that produces mycotoxins. When disturbed, these spores become airborne and are inhaled, leading to respiratory irritation, chronic coughing, wheezing, and other allergic reactions, particularly in children whose immune systems are more vulnerable. The continuous exposure since the start of summer aligns perfectly with the onset of your symptoms.

I must strongly advise against cleaning this yourself. Disturbing the mold without proper containment will aerosolize a massive amount of spores and toxins throughout your home, drastically increasing exposure and potentially making the health situation much worse. Proper remediation requires industrial-grade HEPA filtration units for containment, specialized antimicrobial agents for neutralization, and professional protective gear.

In the UAE, remediation must adhere to strict guidelines to ensure the problem is solved at its source. I recommend you call for a professional inspection and hygienization service immediately. Our certified team at Saniservice can conduct a thorough assessment, identify the full extent of the contamination (which often spreads behind walls), and execute a safe, compliant remediation.
