Is this mold causing my kids' persistent cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and we can't figure out why. I finally pulled our sofa away from the wall in the living room, which is near the AC vent, and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading behind it. It must have been growing there for months since we never move the furniture. Could this mold be the cause of their coughs, and what's the safest way to clean it without making us sicker?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that the black mold growth behind your sofa is the cause of your children's persistent cough. In the UAE's humid climate, air conditioning units are a common source of condensation, creating the perfect damp environment for mold to thrive, especially in concealed, poorly ventilated areas like behind furniture. The continuous operation of the AC vent likely provided both the moisture and the organic material (dust) for the mold to proliferate over several months.

The type of mold you describe—black, fuzzy, and widespread—could potentially be Stachybotrys chartarum, commonly referred to as "black mold." This species is known for producing mycotoxins that can cause significant respiratory irritation, particularly in children, the elderly, or those with compromised immune systems. Symptoms include chronic coughing, wheezing, throat irritation, and headaches. Disturbing this mold without proper containment can aerosolize these spores and mycotoxins, drastically increasing airborne concentrations and potentially making your family's symptoms much worse.

Given the extent of the growth and the health symptoms present, I strongly advise against attempting to clean this yourself. DIY methods often fail to address the root moisture problem and can dangerously spread the contamination. For a situation of this severity, professional inspection and remediation are not just recommended but are essential for your family's health.

Our certified team at Saniservice uses industry-standard protocols, including containment barriers, HEPA filtration, and specialized antimicrobial agents, to safely remediate the mold and identify the underlying moisture source to prevent recurrence.
