Mold in clothes making my family sick?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and I’m starting to panic. I just pulled out a stack of winter clothes from the storage cupboard under our stairs in Jumeirah and found a bunch of them covered in black and green fuzzy spots. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this. How urgent is it that I get this professionally cleaned, and could this be the reason my family is getting sick?

Based on your description of fuzzy black and green spots on stored clothing and the persistent respiratory symptoms in your children, this situation warrants immediate professional attention. The visual growth you describe is a significant indicator of an active mold colony. The proximity of this contaminated storage to your living space means fungal spores are likely aerosolizing and circulating through your home's air, which is a probable cause of the non-stop coughing.

In Dubai's climate, the combination of high ambient humidity and the constant use of air conditioning creates ideal conditions for mold, particularly in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces like under-stair cupboards. The AC can cause temperature differentials that lead to condensation within walls and storage areas, providing the moisture mold needs to thrive on organic materials like cotton and wool.

From a health perspective, continuous exposure to mold spores and their metabolic byproducts (mycotoxins) can cause a range of symptoms, primarily respiratory issues like coughing, wheezing, and throat irritation. Children are particularly susceptible due to their developing respiratory systems.

Do not attempt to clean these items yourself. Disturbing the mold will release a massive plume of spores, exacerbating the contamination and your family's exposure. The situation is urgent.

You require a professional mold inspection to assess the full extent of the contamination, which often extends beyond the visible growth. We at Saniservice are certified to conduct such inspections in accordance with UAE environmental standards. Our process includes air quality testing to identify spore types and concentration levels, which is critical for determining the appropriate remediation protocol. We will safely remediate the source, treat the affected belongings, and provide a hygienization certificate upon completion.

For the health of your family, I strongly recommend you contact us immediately for a comprehensive assessment. Please call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an inspection.
