Can I clean black mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the last few weeks and I've just found patches of black mold behind their bedroom curtains. We live in a villa in Al Barsha and the walls always feel a bit damp after I run the AC. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or do I absolutely need to call a professional company to deal with it?

Based on your description, you absolutely need a professional inspection and remediation. The situation you've described—persistent cough in children, visible black mold growth, and consistently damp walls in an Al Barsha villa—is a serious indoor air quality issue that requires expert intervention.

Attempting to clean this yourself with bleach is strongly discouraged. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and concrete, as it only bleaches the surface mold while leaving the root system intact. It also fails to address the underlying moisture source. In the UAE's high humidity climate, your AC should be removing moisture, not contributing to dampness. The damp walls indicate a potential AC condensate drain line leak, insufficient insulation causing condensation (a common issue with villa construction here), or a more significant water intrusion problem.

UAE regulations, particularly from Dubai Municipality, have strict guidelines for environmental health in residences. Proper containment, air scrubbing, and disposal of contaminated materials are mandatory for health and safety. Disturbing the mold without these protocols will aerosolize toxic spores, significantly worsening the air quality and potentially exacerbating your children's respiratory issues.

For a case like this, a certified professional inspection is non-negotiable. We use moisture meters, thermal imaging, and air quality tests to identify the exact species and the full extent of the contamination, which is often hidden within wall cavities. We then execute a full remediation plan to solve the moisture problem and safely remove the mold.
