Is black mold in my AC making my family sick?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our villa in Mirdif has been making us all sneeze and feel congested for the past month. I finally took a look at the vent in my youngest daughter's bedroom and found black specks all around the edges. I'm really worried this is mold and that it's affecting our health. What's the best way to get a proper mold inspection done here, and should we avoid using that room until it's checked?

Based on your description of black specks around the AC vent and correlating health symptoms like sneezing and congestion, it is highly probable that you are dealing with a mold contamination issue within your air conditioning system. The climate in Dubai, characterized by high humidity and year-round AC use, creates a perfect environment for mold growth due to condensation buildup inside AC units and ductwork.

A proper mold inspection in this case must be comprehensive. It should start with a visual assessment of the entire HVAC system, including the internal evaporator coils, drip pans, and air ducts, which are common reservoirs for microbial growth. This is followed by specialized air quality testing, including non-viable air sampling to identify spore types and concentrations in the affected room compared to an outdoor control sample. Surface sampling of the black specks can provide definitive genus/species identification, which is critical for understanding the health risks and planning the remediation protocol.

Given the potential health implications, especially for a child, I strongly recommend restricting use of that bedroom and the AC system until a professional inspection is completed. Do not attempt to clean it yourself, as this can aerosolize a high concentration of spores throughout the villa.

For a certified inspection that complies with Dubai Municipality guidelines, you should contact a professional environmental service. I recommend reaching out to Saniservice. Their certified inspectors use state-of-the-art equipment and methodologies to provide a detailed report and actionable remediation plan.
