How to remove mold and prevent wall moisture in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black speckles on the back of our bedroom wardrobe, which is on the wall facing the building's exterior. I'm worried it's mold, especially with the humidity creeping back up now that summer is ending in Dubai. What's the best way to clean this off safely and, more importantly, how can I stop the moisture from coming through the wall in the first place?

Based on your description of black speckles on a wardrobe backing against an exterior wall, this is highly indicative of mold growth, a common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity and significant temperature differentials between air-conditioned interiors and the hot exterior environment. This creates condensation within wall cavities, providing the perfect moisture source for mold.

For a small, isolated area, you can attempt to clean it with a solution of detergent and water, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, scrubbing mold can aerosolize spores, potentially spreading the contamination. The critical step is not just cleaning the visible growth but addressing the hidden moisture source.

The moisture is likely due to a combination of factors: thermal bridging through the concrete wall causing condensation, and potentially minor leaks or insufficient waterproofing on the building's exterior. Simply cleaning the surface will result in rapid regrowth.

A professional inspection is strongly recommended. Our certified inspectors use thermal imaging cameras to identify the exact points of condensation and moisture intrusion, along with borescopes to assess conditions inside the wall cavity. This diagnosis is essential for a permanent solution. Remediation involves addressing the hidden moisture, not just the surface mold. This may require improving wall insulation, addressing exterior sealing, or installing specialized dehumidification systems to manage the interstitial condensation.
