Can I clean this recurring bathroom mold myself?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our second bathroom that we rarely use has had a black speckled patch growing in the corner near the shower for a couple of months now. I tried wiping it with vinegar, but it just came back darker after a few days, and the whole room has that damp, earthy smell that won't go away. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner from Ace Hardware, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning service to deal with it properly?

Based on your description of a recurring, dark, speckled patch accompanied by a persistent damp, earthy odor, this is a clear case of active mold colonization, not just surface staining. The climate in Dubai, with its extreme humidity and constant use of air conditioning, creates a perfect environment for mold, especially in under-ventilated, damp areas like a rarely used bathroom.
Vinegar is a weak acid and often ineffective against the root structure (hyphae) of more robust mold species. Stronger, off-the-shelf cleaners from a hardware store are typically chlorine-based biocides. These can bleach the visible growth but often fail to penetrate porous materials like grout and drywall to kill the root system, leading to rapid regrowth. Furthermore, improper use can aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination. In the UAE, improper remediation that disturbs mold can inadvertently violate public health guidelines by cross-contaminating other areas of the property. For a recurring issue with a musty odor, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters and thermal imaging to identify the exact source of the moisture—whether it's condensation from AC ducts, a hidden plumbing leak, or insufficient ventilation—and then take air and surface samples to identify the mold species, which is critical for determining the correct remediation protocol. For a proper and permanent solution, I advise against a DIY approach. Please call our specialists at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. Saniservice employs UAE-compliant containment and removal techniques, including HEPA filtration and antimicrobial treatments, to ensure the mold is resolved safely and does not return. |
