Is our AC mold making us sick?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in our bedroom in our Jumeirah villa seems to be blowing out a musty, damp smell that's gotten worse since the humidity spiked. My husband and I have both been waking up with stuffy noses, sore throats, and this weird fatigue that just won't shift. I finally pulled the filter out and the inside of the unit has black speckles all around the vents.
How quickly should we get this professionally cleaned, and should we see a doctor about these specific symptoms to rule out a mold-related issue?

Based on your description, there is a very high probability that your AC unit is indeed the source of a mold infestation and is contributing to your symptoms. The musty odor, visible black speckling (likely Cladosporium or Aspergillus species), and the correlation with the recent spike in Dubai's humidity are classic indicators. The symptoms you and your husband are experiencing—persistent fatigue, sore throats, and nasal congestion—are common acute reactions to mold exposure, known as Microbial Volatile Organic Compounds (mVOCs) and mycotoxins.
The UAE's climate, characterized by extreme humidity and year-round AC use, creates a perfect environment for mold growth within HVAC systems. Condensation inside the units provides the necessary moisture, while dust and debris on the coils and in the ducts act as a food source. You should address this with urgency. Firstly, I strongly recommend you both consult a physician to discuss these specific environmental exposure symptoms. Secondly, you require a professional inspection and remediation immediately. DIY cleaning is insufficient and can aerosolize spores, worsening contamination. The inside of the ductwork requires specialized equipment like HEPA vacuums and antimicrobial coatings. Our certified teams at Saniservice are trained in Dubai Municipality guidelines for indoor air quality and remediation. We conduct a thorough inspection, including air and surface sampling, to identify the spore types and concentration, then execute a complete hygienization process for your entire AC system. Do not delay, as prolonged exposure can exacerbate health issues. For immediate assistance, please call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an inspection. |
