Can black mold around my AC vent cause health issues?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my apartment seems to have black spots around the vent in the master bedroom, and I’ve been waking up with a stuffy nose for a couple of months. I wiped it away with a cloth but it came back darker and more spread out a week later. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or do I need to call a professional AC cleaning service for this?

Based on my professional experience with mold issues in Dubai, the presence of recurrent black discoloration around your AC vent is a significant concern that absolutely can cause health issues. The symptoms you describe—chronic stuffy nose upon waking—are classic indicators of exposure to microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs) and mycotoxins released by active mold colonies.
The substance you wiped away is likely Stachybotrys chartarum, commonly called black mold, or another melanized fungus like Cladosporium. Its rapid return, darker and more widespread, confirms an active moisture source is feeding it. In our climate, this is almost always due to excessive condensation within the AC system itself, caused by a combination of high ambient humidity, low thermostat settings creating a high delta-T, or a clogged condensate drain pan. Wiping the visible growth on the vent is a surface-level fix; the primary reservoir is inside the ductwork and on the cooling coils, which you cannot access. Using bleach is strongly discouraged. It is ineffective on porous surfaces, its high water content can actually feed the mold root structure, and its fumes mixed with MVOCs can create a hazardous air environment. Furthermore, improper cleaning can aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination throughout your apartment. This is not a job for a standard AC cleaning service. This requires a professional environmental assessment. Dubai Municipality has strict guidelines on indoor air quality, and remediation must be performed to specific standards to ensure the problem is resolved at its source. Our team at Saniservice uses fiber-optic inspection cameras to assess the internal ducts, professional-grade HEPA scrubbing equipment, and EPA-approved antimicrobials to remediate the issue safely and permanently. Given your health symptoms and the recurrent nature of the growth, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. Please call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an assessment. Your health is not something to experiment with. |
