Black mold in bathroom making kids cough: DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold growing in the grout between our bathroom tiles. It's our main bathroom in the apartment and the smell is really strong, especially after a hot shower when the humidity gets trapped in there. I tried scrubbing it with bleach, but it just came back after a week. Is this a DIY job with a better product, or do I need to call in a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

Based on your description, this is a serious situation requiring professional intervention, not a DIY solution. The recurrent black mold, strong musty odor, and especially the respiratory symptoms in your children are significant red flags.
The mold you see on the grout is likely just the surface manifestation of a deeper problem. In Dubai's high-humidity climate, combined with constant AC use creating temperature differentials, condensation forms within the walls. This moisture penetrates behind the tiles, feeding the root structure (hyphae) of the mold. Scrubbing the surface with bleach only removes the visible spores; it does not address the moisture source or the root system, which is why it returns so aggressively. Furthermore, bleach can exacerbate the problem by adding moisture and its fumes are hazardous to inhale, especially in a poorly ventilated bathroom. The coughing is a clear indicator that mycotoxins and spores are becoming airborne, contaminating your indoor air quality and affecting your family's health. Given the health risks and the high probability of hidden growth, a professional inspection is critical. We use moisture meters, thermal imaging cameras, and air quality tests to assess the full extent of contamination behind the walls and in the air. Remediation involves isolating the area, using HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, safely removing contaminated materials (like grout and possibly sections of drywall), and applying professional-grade, EPA-approved antimicrobial solutions to eliminate the root system. For the health of your family and a permanent solution, I strongly recommend you cease DIY efforts and contact a certified professional.
