Can I remove black mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom closet has been leaking for a while and now I’ve discovered a huge patch of black mold on the back wall and some clothes. We live in an older building in Bur Dubai and the humidity just makes it worse. Is this something I can treat myself with bleach, or do I absolutely need to call a professional company, and roughly how much would that cost for a small area?

Based on the conditions you've described—a persistent AC leak in a Bur Dubai building, high ambient humidity, and visible black mold growth on structural walls and contents—this is a situation that absolutely requires professional assessment and remediation. Attempting a DIY treatment with bleach is strongly discouraged. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and wood, as it only bleaches the surface mold without addressing the root system. More critically, it can agitate the spores, increasing airborne contamination and potential health risks.

The UAE's climate, with its high humidity and constant AC use, creates a perfect environment for mold proliferation. What you see on the surface is often just a fraction of the problem; the moisture from the leak has likely penetrated deep into the building materials. A certified professional will not only contain and remove the contaminated materials safely but, most importantly, will identify and rectify the source of the moisture—in this case, the AC leak—to prevent immediate recurrence. This is a critical step mandated by best practices and Dubai Municipality guidelines for healthy indoor environments.

For a small, contained area like a closet, the cost for professional remediation can vary, but you should anticipate an investment starting from approximately AED 1,500 to AED 3,000. This typically includes a detailed inspection, moisture mapping, containment setup, safe removal of affected materials, antimicrobial treatment, and verification that the space is safe.

Given the significant health risks and potential for structural damage, I recommend you contact a certified specialist immediately.
