Found black mold behind couch, who to call first?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah seems to be blowing out a weird, damp smell that's getting stronger. I just pulled the couch away from the wall behind it and found a huge patch of black mold spreading from the corner. We've lived here for 2 years and never had this issue until after that crazy humidity last week. What's the best way to get a reliable mold inspection done here, and should I be calling my landlord first or the inspector?

Based on your description, this is a serious situation that requires immediate professional attention. The damp smell from the AC and the visible black mold growth are classic indicators of a significant moisture issue, likely exacerbated by the recent high humidity levels common in Dubai's climate. This environment, combined with year-round AC use, creates ideal conditions for mold proliferation through condensation.

You should contact your landlord or property management company immediately. According to UAE rental law, landlords are typically responsible for maintaining the property's structure and ensuring it is habitable, which includes addressing infestations like mold that result from building issues (e.g., leaks, inadequate insulation, or faulty AC systems). Inform them in writing, with photos, to create a formal record.

However, for a reliable and accurate assessment, you need a certified mold inspection from a professional environmental company. Landlords may sometimes opt for a quick, superficial clean-up that fails to address the root moisture cause, leading to rapid regrowth. A professional inspection involves moisture mapping, thermal imaging, and air quality testing to identify the exact source of moisture and the full extent of contamination, including within the AC system and behind walls.

For a comprehensive inspection and a detailed remediation protocol, I strongly recommend contacting our specialists at Saniservice. Call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. Our certified experts will provide a definitive assessment and a scope of work you can present to your landlord to ensure the problem is resolved correctly and permanently.
