How to remove and prevent mold on exterior wall?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, powdery spots appearing along the bottom edge of our bedroom wall, right behind the headboard. It's the wall that faces the outside, and I'm worried it might be getting worse during the humid nights. What's the best way to clean this and what can I do to stop the moisture from coming through in the first place?

The black, powdery spots you're describing are a classic indicator of a mold colony, likely exacerbated by the specific conditions of your exterior wall. In Dubai's climate, exterior walls are prone to thermal bridging, where the intense outdoor heat meets the cooled interior air from your AC, leading to significant condensation. This trapped moisture, especially behind furniture like a headboard which restricts airflow, creates an ideal breeding ground for mold.

For removal, do not simply wipe it. Disturbing the colony without proper containment can aerosolize spores and spread them. For a small area, a solution of diluted white vinegar or a specialized mold-cleaning agent can be effective, but you must wear an N95 mask and gloves. However, given its location on an exterior wall, this is likely a symptom of a persistent moisture issue.

The paramount step is addressing the source. The moisture is likely infiltrating due to minor cracks in the plaster or inadequate waterproofing on the exterior façade, which is a common issue here. To prevent recurrence, you must first identify and seal these entry points. Furthermore, improving ventilation is critical. Move the headboard slightly away from the wall to allow air to circulate and use a dehumidifier in the room, especially during the more humid nights.

For a definitive solution, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. We use thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint the exact location of the moisture intrusion and air quality tests to identify the mold species, as some types like Stachybotrys (true "black mold") require specialized remediation protocols. Our certified team at Saniservice can then execute the correct removal, apply antimicrobial coatings, and advise on structural repairs to prevent its return.
