Can I remove bedroom black mold myself or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom has been leaking a bit onto the carpet for a while and now we've discovered a large patch of black mold behind the wardrobe. I'm worried about my family breathing this in, but I'm not sure if this is something I can tackle myself with bleach from the supermarket or if I need to call a professional company to handle it properly.

Based on the situation you've described, I strongly advise against attempting to remove this mold yourself. The combination of a long-term AC leak and a large patch of black mold behind furniture indicates a significant and potentially hazardous infestation. Supermarket bleach is ineffective for this type of remediation. It only removes surface discoloration on porous materials like carpet and drywall but does not kill the mold roots (hyphae) nor address the spores it has released. Furthermore, mixing bleach with other cleaners common in households can produce toxic chlorine gas.

In Dubai's humid climate, AC units are a primary source of moisture intrusion if not properly maintained. The condensation that leads to leaks creates an ideal breeding ground for mold species that can be harmful when aerosolized. Disturbing the colony by moving the wardrobe will inevitably release a massive cloud of spores into your bedroom air, putting your family at risk of respiratory issues, allergic reactions, and other health concerns.

For a case of this severity, a professional inspection and remediation are not just recommended but essential. Our certified technicians at Saniservice follow strict protocols based on international standards (IICRC S520) and local UAE guidelines. The process involves containing the area with physical barriers and negative air pressure to prevent cross-contamination, safely removing and disposing of unsalvageable porous materials (like the affected carpet and possibly drywall), and using specialized biocides and HEPA filtration to clean the air and structure. We will also identify and rectify the root cause—the AC leak—to prevent recurrence.

For the health of your family, please do not disturb the area. Contact our experts for a proper assessment. Call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.
