Is this mold in my bedroom a DIY fix?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the corner where the wall meets the ceiling in our master bedroom. It's right behind the headboard, so we never saw it before moving the furniture. I'm worried it's been there a while, especially after the humid weather we had last month. Is this something I can handle myself, or do I need to call a professional mold inspection company in Dubai?

Based on your description, this is a very common issue we encounter in Dubai, especially in bedrooms. The location—a corner where the wall meets the ceiling—is a classic high-risk area for condensation buildup. Year-round air conditioning creates cold surfaces, and when this meets Dubai's high ambient humidity (particularly after humid spells or if the AC is undersized/not draining properly), moisture condenses, leading to mold growth behind furniture where air circulation is poor.

While the visible black spots might seem superficial, the fact it's been growing undetected for up to two years is a significant concern. This suggests a persistent moisture issue that has likely penetrated beyond the surface paint and into the underlying plasterboard. DIY methods like wiping with bleach or vinegar are strongly discouraged. They only address the surface discoloration, not the root moisture problem or the hyphae (root system) growing within the wall. This leads to rapid regrowth and can aerosolize spores, potentially causing health issues.

According to UAE health and safety guidelines, proper remediation requires identifying and eliminating the moisture source, containing the affected area to prevent cross-contamination, and safely removing and disposing of contaminated porous materials like drywall.

Given the prolonged growth period and location, I highly recommend a professional inspection. Our certified inspectors at Saniservice use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to accurately diagnose the extent of the damage and the source of moisture hidden within the structure. This is not a typical DIY fix. For a definitive assessment and a remediation plan, please call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.
