Should we sleep in a room with spreading black mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, speckled spots spreading along the corner of our master bedroom wall behind the wardrobe. It's an interior wall and the room always feels a bit damp, even with the AC on. With the humidity lately, it seems to be getting bigger every day. How urgent is it that we get this professionally treated, and should we be sleeping in that room?

Based on the symptoms you've described—black speckled spots on an interior wall, persistent dampness, and rapid spreading due to recent humidity—this is a situation that requires immediate professional attention. The combination of Dubai's high ambient humidity and the constant cooling from your AC unit creates a perfect environment for condensation, particularly on and within cooler interior walls. This condensation provides the moisture necessary for mold, likely the common Stachybotrys chartarum (true "black mold") or Aspergillus niger, to thrive.

I strongly advise against sleeping in that room. Prolonged exposure to the mycotoxins and spores released by an active colony can lead to significant health issues, including allergic reactions, respiratory problems, chronic sinusitis, and exacerbated asthma. The risk is heightened during sleep when you have prolonged, close-range exposure in an enclosed space.

The urgency for professional remediation is high. In the UAE, the Dubai Municipality has clear guidelines on indoor air quality and building habitability, and a spreading infestation like this falls under that purview. Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach or other household products, as this can agitate the colony, causing a massive release of spores and potentially spreading the contamination throughout your HVAC system.

The remediation process by a certified company like Saniservice involves containment of the area, specialized HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, safe removal of contaminated materials, and most critically, identifying and rectifying the source of the moisture to prevent recurrence.
